Collateral Materials
In addition to user manuals, product documentation often includes collateral materials such as data-sheets, reference cards, and marketing brochures for quick and easy access to important product features. In addition to standard documentation localization, collateral materials localization requires more linguistic effort because verbatim translations often do not work. Unlike technical translations, which are typically straightforward, localization of collateral materials frequently require extra copyrighting or trans-creation to make the localized text read smoothly in the target language. Secondly, strong graphic design and publishing skills are needed as collateral materials often employ extensive visual elements. Furthermore, collateral materials are frequently created on the Macintosh platform, a computer that was originally developed for graphic artist and typesetters in the mid 80's. Unfortunately, most TM tools are developed for Windows based machines and are incompatible with Macintosh files.
